Snowmobile TrailsGeorgetown Lake Area One of Montana's most popular lakes is the centerpiece of a winter sports area that offers snowmobiling, ice fishing, downhill and cross-country skiing. On the Pintler Scenic Route, Georgetown Lake is surrounded by mountains and wilderness. There's an abundance of silver salmon in Georgetown Lake, fun at nearby downhill slopes, Nordic trails and mineral hot springs swimming pools. Three major trail systems include East Fork, west Georgetown Lake, which offers popular family snowmobiling with views of the Anaconda Pintler Mountains; Red Lion, east of Georgetown lake, which offers more challenging riding with an ever-present deep snowpack; and Blodgett, south of Georgetown Lake, which offer family touring with a snow shelter for picnics and cookouts. Other popular trails include Peterson Meadow, Montgomery Ridge, Windy Ridge, Storm Lake, Happy Creek, Warm Springs, and Hidden Lake. 40 miles from Fairmont. Elk Park Area Nestled on the Continental Divide, Elk Park is minutes away from Butte and offers some of Southwest Montana's best snowmobiling. The Elk Park trail system provides spectacular views and easy access for families and people of all ages. The trail system ties into the Deer Lodge trail system for additional riding opportunities. Elk Park trails offer a 38-mile loop through the Lowlands and Lockhart areas with groomed family trails and some open play areas. This loop connects with the Deer Lodge Trail System for extending riding areas. A convenient parking area with easy access is just 2 miles off I-15. 40 miles from Fairmont. Wise River Area In December, snow transforms these mountains and river valleys into a giant snowmobile park. Choose one of the many trails within the system, ride your snowmobile to nearby Maverick Mountain for an afternoon of downhill skiing. The Wise River - Elkhorn Hot Spring National Recreation Snowmobile Trail connects Wise River with the Grasshopper Valley. Trails include Quartz Hill, leading to a massive, high plateau; Anderson Meadows, which leads to backcountry lakes and meadow play areas. Pattengail travels eight miles to Pattengails Falls. Lacy Creek has 10 miles of groomed and ungroomed trails to five high mountain lakes. Long Tom has open areas and 11 miles of groomed trails and leads to the Long Tom Cabin, a warming hut. Mt. Haggin has 15 miles of groomed trails leading to large play areas at high elevation. 42 miles from Fairmont.Wisdom, Jackson, Sula Area Cold, dry powder snow comes early and stays late, assuring great sledding. If you seek challenge and solitude and don't mind sharing the trails with moose, elk and other wintering wildlife, Wisdom is the place for you. Join the popular Wise River-Polaris Trail and Wise River trails or the Steel Creek trails just east of Wisdom or head west on the Gibbonsville Road, which continues all the way to Salmon, Idaho. The Placer Creek Trail crosses the Continental Divide near Lost Trail Pass and drops into the Bitterroot Valley. Snowmobilers will also enjoy the Stewart Meadow Complex in this system. 60 miles from Fairmont. Dillon Area One of Montana's better-kept secrets lies in the pristine mountain valleys in the southwest corner of the state. The mountains are the Pioneers and the place is the Grasshopper and Big Hole Valley region. The trail system follows a scenic route between Wise River and the Grasshopper Valley, a designated National Forest Scenic Byway. Trails lead to the ghost town of Coolidge and the Elkhorn mine. 200 miles of major groomed trails heading west tie into the Wisdom/Jackson trail system at Bear Lake (see Wisdom/Jackson) and head north to the Wise River trail system (see Wise River).
